Photo print quality: the 5 criteria that (really) make the difference

You’ve spent time choosing your best photos – the ones that deserve to be framed, given as gifts, or hung somewhere where they’ll really be seen. And yet, once you’ve got the print in your hands, something’s not quite right. The colours are dull, the details are lost, and the overall result is disappointing.

This sort of mishap happens more often than you’d think, and the cause is almost never the photo itself. It stems from technical settings that aren’t visible on screen but inevitably show up on paper.

Resolution and file format: the invisible foundations of a beautiful print

Even before we talk about paper or inks, there is a technical reality that you cannot see on screen but which determines everything else. The resolution of your file is the starting point. All too often overlooked, it alone accounts for a large proportion of disappointments when printing. A few basic concepts are enough to understand why, and above all, to avoid them.

For printing, is 72 or 300 dpi better?

Dpi, or ‘dots per inch’, measures the density of detail contained in an image. The higher this figure, the more precise and sharp the result will be on the final medium.

72 dpi is the standard for screens. It’s sufficient for displaying a clear image on a mobile phone or computer, but completely inadequate for printing. On paper, this resolution results in a blurry print, sometimes even pixelated at the edges.

300 dpi, on the other hand, is the universal benchmark in the world of photo printing. At this resolution, the human eye can no longer distinguish individual dots. The print appears sharp, details are preserved and colour transitions are smooth. This is the threshold below which you start to take risks.

If your photo is at 72 dpi and you want to print it, simply changing the value in software is not enough. What really matters is the total number of pixels in the image, not just the value displayed in the file properties.

300 dpi or 600 dpi – which is better?

The answer is simpler than you might think. In theory, 600 dpi offers twice the resolution. In practice, the difference is virtually invisible to the naked eye on most photo prints.

As mentioned earlier, 300 dpi remains the professional standard for a very good reason. It reaches the threshold beyond which the human eye can no longer distinguish additional detail. Increasing the resolution to 600 dpi only provides a noticeable improvement in very specific cases – such as a large-format print viewed at very close range, or certain specialised technical applications.

For the vast majority of photo prints, posters or photo books, aiming for 300 dpi is not only sufficient but recommended. Unnecessarily pushing the resolution up to 600 dpi makes the file considerably larger. This also complicates online submission and may even slow down order processing without bringing any visible benefit to the final result.

Is 50 megapixels enough?

A 50-megapixel sensor produces very high-definition images. In figures, this equates to approximately 8,700 x 5,800 pixels, depending on the sensor’s aspect ratio. This is more than enough to print very large formats whilst maintaining perfect quality, well beyond an A1 poster (59.4 x 84.1 cm)

But beware of a common misconception. The megapixels of a camera sensor and the DPI of a print are two distinct concepts. Megapixels measure the amount of information captured. DPI measures how this information is reproduced on a physical medium. A 50-megapixel file will give you great flexibility regarding print size. However, it is always the combination of pixel size and the chosen format that determines the final quality.

For a standard 10 x 15 cm photo print, a few megapixels are more than enough. For an 80x120 cm poster, you’ll be glad to have a file with plenty of pixels.

What happens when your resolution is too low?

A resolution that’s too low leaves nothing to the imagination when printed. Whilst a screen smooths out imperfections thanks to its backlighting, paper reveals everything. Outlines become blurred. Solid-colour areas reveal unsightly blocks, and fine details disappear completely.

The problem often stems from files downloaded from social media or shared via messaging apps. These platforms automatically compress images to reduce the load on their servers, sometimes without the user realising it. A photo that looks perfectly sharp on Instagram may have lost a large portion of its data – and therefore its ability to be printed in large format.

The best practice is always to go back to the original file – the one straight from the camera or smartphone, before any compression or sharing – as this is the file that contains all the captured pixels, and it is this file that will produce the best results on paper.

Paper, inks and colour gamut: what low-cost printers don’t tell you

The file resolution is your part of the job. But once the file has been sent, the printer takes over. And this is where the differences in quality between service providers become glaringly obvious: the paper used, the quality of the inks, and the ability to reproduce colours faithfully. It is the go-to choice for all personal or artistic photography.

The quality of the paper, next. Professional photo paper absorbs ink differently to standard paper. It guarantees deeper blacks, brighter whites and far greater longevity over time. A print on low-quality paper may start to yellow or fade in just a few years.

Finally, equipment calibration. A properly calibrated printer reproduces colours consistently from one print to the next. This is what sets a professional lab apart from a low-cost solution, where each order may produce a slightly different result.

Ink and paper: the real factors behind a dull or vibrant result

Colour gamut: why your print might not do your photo justice

Preparing your photos properly before placing your order ensures that nothing is lost between the screen and the paper. A few simple steps are all it takes, and they really do make a difference to the final result.

To prepare your photos for successful printing, there’s one key step to adopt that’s arguably the most important. That is to always work from the original file. Not the version shared via WhatsApp, not the photo downloaded from Facebook. The raw file, exactly as it came out of your camera or editing app. Social media platforms and messaging apps automatically compress images – sometimes very aggressively – without you realising it on screen.

Next, remember to check your photo’s exposure before sending it. Smartphone screens are often very bright, which makes images look better than they actually are. A photo that appears well-exposed on your phone may turn out noticeably darker on paper. A slight adjustment to the mid-tones beforehand prevents this sort of disappointment.

The file format is also very important. JPEG is well suited to photo printing, provided the compression is set to the highest quality setting when exporting. Every time you save a file as a JPEG, data is lost. If you’re editing your photos, work in RAW or TIFF whilst you’re in the editing phase. So only export to JPEG once, when you’re ready to send the file.

What works for a standard photo print isn’t necessarily suitable for a large-format poster or a photo book. Each medium has its own technical constraints. Anticipating these helps avoid many surprises when you receive your order.

For small or medium-format photo prints, the requirements are relatively straightforward. A photo taken with a recent smartphone generally offers more than enough resolution for a 10x15 cm or 20x30 cm print. Note, however, that extra care is needed with framing. This is because the aspect ratio of a mobile phone photo does not always match the proportions of a standard paper size.

For a large-format poster, the situation changes. The larger the printed area, the more any imperfections in the source file are magnified. A slight pixelation that’s invisible on a small print becomes frankly distracting on a 60x80 cm poster. You need to start with a file containing enough pixels to ‘hold up’ – in the literal sense of the term.

For a photo book, there are two main constraints. Each page features an image, sometimes across a full double-page spread. The quality must be up to scratch for every image, not just the cover photo. This is often when you realise that certain holiday photos downloaded from social media are no longer suitable for printing.
