You’ve chosen your best photos, the ones that deserve to be printed rather than left buried on your phone. You place your order, eagerly await delivery… and, unfortunately, the prints disappoint you. The edges are blurred, the details are lost, and you don’t really understand why. In reality, the answer often comes down to one word: resolution.

What photo resolution should you use for printing?

A photo’s resolution is measured in DPI, which stands for ‘dots per inch’ – the number of ink dots per square inch on the final medium. The higher this figure, the sharper and more detailed the image will be on paper.

A screen displays an image correctly at 72 DPI. This is sufficient for digital display. But on paper, this density produces a blurry and sometimes pixelated result, especially as the size increases. For photo printing, the universal threshold recommended by professional labs is 300 DPI. Below this, you start to take risks.

What really matters isn’t just the DPI value displayed in the file properties. It’s the total number of pixels your image contains, combined with the print size you’ve chosen. These two factors together determine whether your print will be sharp or disappointing.

What is the correct photo resolution?

As you will have realised, the answer is 300 DPI at the final print size. This is the standard adopted by all reputable photo labs and is based on a simple physiological fact. At 300 DPI, the human eye can no longer distinguish individual dots. The image appears continuous, details are preserved and colour transitions remain smooth.

Below this threshold, the effects vary depending on the viewing distance. At 150 DPI, a large-format print viewed from more than a metre away may still look acceptable. Below 100 DPI, pixelation becomes visible to the naked eye, even on small prints. On a 10x15 cm photo print held in your hands, this sort of imperfection does not go unnoticed.

A recent smartphone with a 12-megapixel camera or higher generally produces files that are more than adequate for standard print sizes. Problems mainly arise with photos downloaded from social media or shared via messaging apps. What is the best print resolution?

In theory, 600 DPI offers twice the density of 300 DPI. In practice, however, it’s important to note that the difference is virtually imperceptible on the vast majority of photo prints. Photo print quality isn’t measured solely by the DPI figure. It also depends on the inks used, the chosen medium and the calibration of the equipment.

Switching to 600 DPI only provides a noticeable improvement in very specific situations. Such as a large-format print that will be viewed from very close up, or certain specialised technical media. For standard prints, posters and photo books, aiming for 300 DPI is not only sufficient, but is what professionals recommend. Unnecessarily increasing the resolution makes the file larger, complicates online uploading and does not improve the visible result on paper.

What is the image resolution required for A4 printing and other formats?

This is often where things get complicated. We know we should aim for 300 DPI, but this figure on its own doesn’t mean much unless it’s linked to the chosen print format. A file that’s perfectly suitable for a 10x15 cm print may prove insufficient for a 50x70 cm poster. It all depends on the number of pixels available in your image.

To avoid any nasty surprises, the simplest approach is to start with a concrete benchmark. Here are the figures you need to know for the most common formats, at 300 DPI and at 150 DPI for large formats viewed from a distance.

Please note that the 150 DPI column applies only to formats viewed from a distance. For a print held in your hands, 300 DPI remains the minimum value you should not fall below.

How do you calculate the number of pixels you need?

You don’t need to be an expert to do this calculation. The formula is simple. Multiply the dimensions of your format in inches by the desired resolution in DPI. One inch is equal to 2.54 cm.

For an A4 at 300 DPI, the calculation is 8.27 inches wide multiplied by 300, giving 2,480 pixels in width. And 11.69 inches in height multiplied by 300 equals 3,508 pixels in height. This is exactly what the table above shows.

In practice, you don’t need to get your calculator out for every order. The key thing to remember is that the larger the format, the more pixels you need. And that the resolution displayed in your file’s properties is merely a guide. What really matters is the actual size of the image in pixels relative to the format you choose.

Smartphone, camera, social media: where does your file come from?

A recent smartphone produces files ranging from 12 to 50 megapixels. This is generally more than enough for standard formats, up to 30x40 cm without any difficulty. A DSLR or mirrorless camera will go even further, with files that allow for large-format prints without compromising on sharpness.

Problems mainly arise with photos downloaded from social media or received via messaging apps. Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger automatically compress images when they’re shared. A 12-megapixel photo may end up at less than 1 megapixel after this processing – without you even noticing it on your screen. This is exactly what results in insufficient resolution for printing and, consequently, a blurry or pixelated print once it’s on paper.

The solution is simple. Always go back to the original file – the one straight from your camera or photo gallery – before sharing or compressing it. This file contains all the captured pixels, and it’s this file that will produce the best result on the final print.

How can you ensure a sharp print, from small prints to large formats?

Having a good file is the foundation. But there are a few additional steps that really make a difference. Some of these take place before you send the file, whilst others depend directly on the print lab.

What you can correct before sending your file

Preparing the file is your part of the process. And it’s simpler than you might think.

The first point is the file format. JPEG is very well suited to photo printing, provided the compression is set to the highest level when exporting. Every time you save a file as a JPEG, there’s a slight loss of data. If you’re editing your photos, work in RAW or TIFF whilst you’re in the editing phase. Only export to JPEG once, when you’re ready to send the final file.

The second point concerns exposure. Smartphone screens are often very bright, which makes photos look better on display. An image that appears well-exposed on your phone may appear noticeably darker on paper. A slight adjustment to the mid-tones beforehand prevents this sort of disappointment.

The third point is the colour space. The vast majority of digital photos are encoded in sRGB, which is the recommended standard for printing. If your file is in Adobe RGB, remember to convert it to sRGB before sending it. Without this step, certain colours may appear slightly off in the print.

Finally, remember to check the framing according to the chosen format. The aspect ratio of a photo taken on a smartphone does not always match the proportions of a standard paper size. If you do not crop your image beforehand, the lab will do so automatically. This can sometimes result in a detail or a face being cut off at the edges.
